Zcash (ZEC)

Zcash is a pure cryptocurrency with privacy protections. Shielded transactions hide the sender, recipient, and value on the blockchain. The goal of this project is to ensure that users can enjoy the advantages of using a public blockchain, while still being sure that their private information is protected. The Zerocoin protocol was improved and transformed into the Zerocash system, which was then developed into the Zcash cryptocurrency in 2016.

Development Team

Zcash has a mid-sized development/advisory/marketing team, which can be seen on their main website. The project has a few particularly well-known advisors, including Gavin Andreson (Bitcoin), Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum), and Arthur Breitman (Tezos).

Criticisms, Caveats, and Competitors

Competitors include various other privacy-oriented coins, such as Monero and Pivx. Since the privacy of Zcash transactions is optional, and not all transactions are processed as private, there is criticism of this project as being inferior to other projects in which all transactions are private both by default and without exception. Also, a lot of people are confused by the differences between Zcoin and Zcash. These are two completely different projects, even though they are similar. See the article below for more clarification.
